Programs 101-150
WBIX
is the virtual radio station of the Bixography web site. WBIX is
dedicated
to the preservation and dissemination of the musical legacy of Bix
Beiderbecke,
the jazz genius from Davenport, Iowa.
This is
radio
on demand. To join other Bixophiles who listen to the program "Bix is
Alive"
in cyberspace, all you have to do is click on any of the links to the
radio
programs.
You will need RealPlayer 7 (or G2)
to play the streaming audio files. It is available free of charge
athttp:/www.real.com
RealPlayer 7 is FREE. There is a RealAudio 7
Plus
version which requires a fee. There is no need to get the Plus
version.
The free version will do nicely.
Instructions: There are two
methods
to listen to a program.
1. If you click the link
"Streaming
Audio File", your real player will open and after a few seconds, music
will start streaming. This method words very well if you have a fast
connection
to the internet. In my computer at home it also works well when I use a
56K modem. However, some WBIX listeners note that, when they use
a 56K modem, Real Audio goes into a rebuffering mode within a
short
time. If this happens, hit the stop button of Real Player and
start
again. If the system goes into rebuffereing again, you may want to try
the following procedure.
2. Left click the "Download
Audio
File" link. With a 56 K modem, it will take about 30 minutes for
download
to be complete. Once the file is downloaded, Real Audio opens and
the program will start playing. There is no problem whatsoever with
rebuffering.
The WBIX program is stored in a temporary file.
3. To store the file in your
computer
use the following procedures. (Thanks to Terry and Bill) Internet
Explorer. Right click on the download option and choose Save Target
as. A window will come up inviting you to save to a folder, it will
also
say the file has a .ram extension. For correctness change .ram to .rm,
though it wont affect playing the file. Netscape
4.08. Go to Edit-Preferences-Applications, scroll down to
X-pn-realaudio
File, then Edit button, then check Save to Disk. When the download
option
is left clicked, a save to folder window as above will come up.
Netscape
4.75. Right click on "download file", go to "save link as"
and
save to a directory of your choice.

All discographies give "unknown" for the drummer. The name of the
drummer is illegible in Trumbauer's ledgers.
Programs 1-110 were created
using analog techniques, e.g., voice and music were recorded on a
casssette tape and then the analog signal was fed into real producer to
create the rm (streaming) file. Program 111 (and, I hope, future
programs) was created using digital techniques. Analog signals from
LPs,78s, and microphone were digitized using Blaze Audio software.
Digital signals from CDs were ripped. All the digital files were
connected in sequence and fed into real producer. The quality of the
sound should be superior for the digitally created programs than
for the programs created using analog technology. I still have some
problems with distortion for signals that are too strong, but I hope to
correct these difficulties in the future.

Programs
1-110 were created using realproducer 8.5 or an earlier version.
Program 111 was created using real producer version 10. The resulting
file was over 30 MB in size. I reverted to real producer 8.5 to
create program # 112. The file is less than 10MB.
The procedure I will utilize from now on is as follows. I will continue
using Blaze Audio to create the wave file from CDs, LPs, 78s,
cassettes, and microphone inputs. I will then use real producer 8.5 to
create the rm files. In this manner, the one-hour programs will be kept
under 10 MB.

I made an error when I compiled the program. The version of "Red
Hot Henry Brown" at this point in the program is that by the Charleston
Chasers, the same as the previous selection. Here are links to the
version by the California Ramblers. http://bixography.com/redhotcr.ram http://bixography.com/wbixmp3/redhotcr.mp3
Note added 5/2/2007. The second tune in the program is not "Red
Hot Henry Brown." It is "Loud Speaking Papa" by the Charleston Chasers.
I thank Nick Dellow for the correction.

WBIX # 148 CORRECTION: "Get Out and Get Under the Moon."
When I was producing the program, I only looked at Rust's Jazz Disco.
He lists two recordings of "Get Out and Get Under the Moon.": May 1928
(Harmony) and June 12, 1928 (Columbia, unissued). Rusts'
Entertainement Discography lists a third recording (Harmony) from Aug
10, 1928 as vocalist with Frank Ferrera's Hawaiian Trio. So the
so-called discrepancy I pointed out is non-existent. Radio
